Medicine Drives Renewal in Scranton

With an economy built on coal and manufacturing, Scranton, Pennsylvania was the poster child for rustbelt decline and the brain drain that accompanies it.  The outmigration of businesses and residents was compounded by the largest shortage of physician in the United States. Today, it’s a statement about the kind of enterprise that happens when community leaders work together toward a common cause.  Tripp Umbach developed the business implementation plan to take the proposed medical school from idea to action and accreditation in just four years.  The result is an independent, allopathic, community-based medical school that has become the axis upon which quality medical care and economic development revolve.  The community has already realized more than $100 million in economic impact in just two years.  Tripp Umbach’s work led to similar assignments and accomplishments at King College, Tennessee, Louisiana College and many other locations throughout the United States.
