Phoenix Rising from the Ashes
Just a few years ago, Phoenix, the nation’s 5th largest city, had a struggling downtown, no medical school and was a newcomer to the highly competitive and rapidly growing biotechnology field. Today, the city-owned Phoenix Biomedical Campus, a 28-acre urban research park with research and academic facilities, features the city’s first four-year medical school and a growing base of biotechnology companies that have led to higher paying jobs and increased tax revenues. The economic spin off is evident in the housing, retail and office developments that have sprouted up to serve the urban center. Working together with the city, Tripp Umbach forged partnerships between the city’s hospitals and the University of Arizona resulting in the business plans, models and proformas that ultimately led to the accreditation and financing of the new medical school.
