Repositioning Rallies Support for Innovation Economy

Expansion and diversification of Arizona from its heavy emphasis on service to a 21st century knowledge economy that would draw higher paying jobs to the state required rallying government, community, higher education and health care leaders around the cause.  Supporters secured $90 million in just five months after Tripp Umbach’s analysis depicted the dramatic increases in economic, employment and government revenue resulting from investment in biotechnology.  Tripp Umbach later laid the strategic framework for what has become one of the most talked about genomics programs in the country, home to the International Genomics Consortium and biotech companies from around the world.  TGEN has outperformed Tripp Umbach’s own economic impact study.  The institute generated $21.7 million in economic payback to Arizona and created 220 jobs in 2006. The economic impact is expected to grow to $31.7 million next year and $72.1 million in 2025.
