Redeploying Resources to Serve the Underserved

Following the closure of hospitals and health clinics in underserved areas of New York City, Tripp Umbach led a community health needs assessment study for the largest municipal hospital and health care system in the country which serves 1.3 million people, including 450,000 uninsured.   Designed to improve access to primary health care services in targeted communities, Tripp Umbach conducted a primary health assessment survey and focus groups across the city’s five boroughs.  The findings led to alliances with community based organizations that now serve on the front lines of the health care system to direct people to the right level of care at the right time within the existing infrastructure.  The efforts have helped reduce the duplication of services, improve access to primary care and enhance the management of chronic conditions.  Ultimately, the initiative reduced health care costs by keeping more people out of the emergency rooms.
