Transforming a Nation’s Health System

With more than 200 completed projects and an international reputation for community health assessment and planning, Tripp Umbach was selected to transform the public health infrastructure for an entire country.  Trinidad and Tobago sought to change its top-down approach into a regional system that could identify needs, focus on affordable, efficient health care and promote wellness.  Tripp Umbach conducted the country’s first comprehensive community health needs assessment, established universal guidelines to allow the country to continually track progress and trained public health personnel to carry out future assessments.  The team laid the groundwork for community based planning by engaging local physicians and community leaders to assess needs and plan services.  The work has helped transform the Ministry of Health into a policy and regulatory body while allowing regional health authorities to address high priority interventions through a primary care model that utilizes both local public and private providers.
