Exploring New Pathways for Alabama’s Future Healthcare Workforce
The Challenge
The Alabama Legislative Services Agency (LSA), the nonpartisan arm supporting the Alabama Legislature through fiscal, legal, and policy expertise, sought to explore an innovative approach to strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce. Recognizing the growing demand for skilled professionals amid an aging population and evolving healthcare landscape, LSA commissioned an evaluation to determine the feasibility of establishing a state-sponsored residential health science high school.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach was engaged to conduct a preliminary feasibility assessment to guide the state’s strategic planning. The study examined programmatic design, clinical and research partnership opportunities, and potential collaborations with local healthcare institutions to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the proposed high school.
The study underscored Alabama’s urgent need to cultivate a robust healthcare talent pipeline to meet future workforce demands. By identifying educational models and partnership opportunities that bridge secondary and postsecondary learning, the initiative provides a roadmap for nurturing future healthcare professionals. The findings highlight the potential of a dedicated health science high school to expand access to education, strengthen community health outcomes, and secure the state’s long-term healthcare capacity.
