Advancing Rural Healthcare Through Medical Education Expansion

The Challenge
Founded in 1850, Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, is a student-centered institution dedicated to preparing global citizens through the integration of liberal arts and professional education. Recognizing the growing physician shortage across Ohio and surrounding states, Heidelberg sought to evaluate the feasibility of developing a College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) to expand access to care and strengthen the regional healthcare workforce.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the potential for a new osteopathic medical school in Tiffin. The analysis included secondary data review, financial modeling, and economic impact projections, providing a clear framework to inform university leadership and guide planning for accreditation through the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
The Impact
Tripp Umbach’s findings indicate that a Heidelberg COM would deliver far-reaching benefits to Tiffin and the surrounding region—enhancing healthcare access, improving patient outcomes, and driving substantial economic growth. The proposed college would create jobs, generate millions in annual regional impact, and attract new development in health sciences education, research, and clinical partnerships.
Tripp Umbach recommends that Heidelberg University advance to the next phase with a formal business plan detailing clinical training partnerships, capital investments, and financial resources to successfully launch and sustain the medical school.
