Advancing Osteopathic Education in Western Pennsylvania

The Challenge
Pennsylvania continues to face significant physician shortages, especially in rural and underserved areas. To address this growing need, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) explored the development of a public osteopathic medical school that could expand access to care and strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted an independent feasibility study to evaluate the viability of establishing the proposed Indiana University of Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine (IUPCOM). The study included a detailed review of regional and statewide healthcare needs, financial modeling, and economic impact analysis, as well as an assessment of potential partnerships and training capacity across clinical networks.
The Impact
The proposed IUPCOM represents a bold step toward expanding healthcare access and driving regional growth. With a mission-centered focus on rural medicine, early clinical exposure, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the school is positioned to prepare the next generation of physicians while advancing economic development across Western Pennsylvania.
