Medical College of Wisconsin
Measuring Statewide Impact Through Education, Research, and Healthcare

The Challenge
As Wisconsin’s largest medical school and a top 100 U.S. research institution, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) plays a vital role in advancing health education, innovation, and care delivery statewide. To better communicate its value to policymakers, partners, and the public, MCW sought a comprehensive evaluation of its economic and community impact.
How We Helped
MCW partnered with Tripp Umbach to conduct an in-depth economic impact study quantifying the institution’s direct, indirect, and induced effects on economic output, employment, and tax revenue. The analysis captured MCW’s broad influence across Wisconsin’s economy and highlighted its leadership in research, workforce development, and healthcare innovation.
Together with its hospital partners, MCW generated a $5.82 billion total economic impact in FY23, supporting 38,586 jobs across Wisconsin. Independently, MCW contributed $3.20 billion to the national economy and sustained 21,030 jobs, while generating $246.1 million in state and local tax revenues. These findings underscore MCW’s essential role in driving statewide growth and improving health outcomes through education, research, and care delivery.
