The Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine - Phoenix

Educating the Next Generation of Arizona’s Physicians

The Challenge

Arizona continues to face a growing and long-term shortage of physicians, particularly in osteopathic medicine. While the demand for physicians is increasing statewide, existing medical education programs are not positioned to meet the projected workforce needs. The Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine (The Valley COM) was proposed to address this gap by establishing a new, Arizona-based osteopathic medical school focused on innovation, community engagement, and workforce development. Advancing the project required a refreshed feasibility assessment that accounted for evolving market conditions, accreditation milestones, and organizational preparedness.

How We Helped

Tripp Umbach conducted a revised feasibility study updating earlier analyses with newly available data. The review evaluated market demand, community and stakeholder support, academic quality, clinical training capacity, financial sustainability, and facilities readiness. The study incorporated updated institutional documentation and regulatory milestones to assess alignment with accreditation standards and long-term operational viability. This comprehensive approach provided leadership with a clear, objective assessment of feasibility and readiness as The Valley COM advanced toward pre-accreditation and program launch.

The Impact

The updated analysis confirmed that The Valley COM is feasible and well-positioned for long-term success. Strong market demand, broad community and healthcare sector support, and a student-centered academic model reinforce the institution’s strategic value to Arizona.
The Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine has achieved pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and has begun recruiting its inaugural class, which will begin in July 2026.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
