The University of Alabama System
Measuring a Statewide Engine of Growth

The Challenge
As Alabama’s largest public higher education and healthcare system, the University of Alabama System sought to clearly quantify its statewide economic and community impact. With three research universities and the UAB Health System driving education, research, and clinical care across the state, the System needed a data-driven assessment to articulate its value to policymakers, business leaders, and citizens.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive economic impact study to measure the UA System’s contributions to Alabama’s economy, workforce, and quality of life. Using detailed data modeling and stakeholder analysis, the study captured the System’s operational, research, clinical, and alumni impacts while also examining broader social and community benefits.
The results demonstrate that the UA System is one of the state’s most powerful economic drivers, generating $18.6 billion annually in total impact and supporting tens of thousands of jobs. Beyond financial outcomes, the report highlights how UA, UAB, UAH, and the UAB Health System fuel innovation, strengthen healthcare delivery, and create opportunity across every region of Alabama.
