Measuring the Economic and Social Impact of a Statewide Leader

The Challenge
As one of Pennsylvania’s most influential research universities, the University of Pittsburgh sought to quantify its full economic and social contributions across the Commonwealth. The study needed to measure not only direct financial outcomes—such as jobs, spending, and tax revenue—but also the broader impact of the university’s innovation, public service, and community engagement.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted an independent economic impact study grounded in robust data modeling and analysis. The report assessed Pitt’s influence across multiple dimensions, including operational and research spending, construction investments, and the day-to-day expenditures of students, faculty, and visitors. It also examined the university’s statewide role in advancing public health, innovation, and workforce development.
In Fiscal Year 2023, Pitt generated $6.6 billion in total economic impact across Pennsylvania—a 24% increase since FY2021. The university continues to serve as a powerful driver of job creation, research innovation, and community growth. With sustained investment and strategic leadership, Pitt remains a cornerstone of economic vitality and long-term development throughout the state.
