The Challenge

The Greater Chattanooga Chamber Foundation is dedicated to advancing regional prosperity by supporting initiatives that strengthen economic vitality and improve community well-being. Located in Hamilton County, Tennessee—one of the state’s fastest-growing areas—Chattanooga has experienced a 9% population increase over the past decade and continues to build on its reputation as a dynamic, forward-thinking city.

How We Helped

In March 2021, the Greater Chattanooga Chamber Foundation partnered with Tripp Umbach to conduct a community transformation study focused on reducing health disparities and expanding economic opportunity across the Greater Chattanooga region. Guided by a Regional Steering Committee of leaders from healthcare, education, government, and community organizations, Tripp Umbach conducted an extensive analysis of health and economic equity issues. The study examined housing stability, food security, healthcare workforce diversity, and the economic cost of health disparities through community data reviews, existing CHNAs, and stakeholder interviews.

The Impact

Tripp Umbach’s findings revealed that health disparities cost the Chattanooga area $132 million in excess medical care and $60 million in lost productivity each year, while high-cost housing creates an additional $200 million annual burden. Environmental health issues affecting children result in an estimated $44 million annual cost.

The analysis provided a clear roadmap for transformation—positioning Chattanooga to build more connected, equitable, and resilient communities. By aligning healthcare, education, and economic development efforts, the region is poised to become a national model for health equity and community revitalization, driving billions in long-term economic benefit.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
