Kansas City University
Educating Healthcare Leaders and Strengthening Regional Economies

The Challenge
Founded in 1916, Kansas City University (KCU) is a private, not-for-profit institution comprising the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Biosciences, with campuses in Kansas City and Joplin, Missouri. As the largest medical school in Missouri and one of the oldest osteopathic medical schools in the nation, KCU sought to measure how its continued growth, research initiatives, and alumni network contribute to healthcare delivery and economic vitality across the region and the country.
How We Helped
In partnership with Kansas City University, Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive analysis to demonstrate the university’s far-reaching economic impact across the Kansas City Metro, Joplin, and beyond. The study assessed operational activity, employment, and community engagement, as well as the broader influence of KCU’s physician alumni nationwide. In a separate engagement, Tripp Umbach also worked with KCU to facilitate a five-year strategic plan centered on guiding the university into its second century of service and impact.
Tripp Umbach found that KCU’s alumni make an extraordinary contribution to healthcare and the economy. More than 10,500 KCU-trained physicians are licensed throughout the United States, generating over $33.6 billion in economic activity and supporting nearly 180,000 jobs nationwide. Since its founding, KCU has produced nearly 11,000 graduates, shaping a highly skilled healthcare workforce and improving access to care in communities across Missouri, Kansas, and the nation.
By combining academic excellence with strategic growth and community engagement, Kansas City University continues to fulfill its mission of advancing education, research, and service—improving the well-being of the communities it serves.
