The Challenge

North Louisiana faces ongoing challenges in healthcare access, workforce shortages, and economic disparities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The region must expand access to high-acuity care, retain and grow its healthcare workforce, and reduce patient outmigration, while ensuring strong returns on public investment and supporting long-term economic stability.

How We Helped

Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive economic impact study of LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) and the Ochsner LSU Health System of North Louisiana (OLHS-NL). Using IMPLAN modeling and primary data collection, the analysis measured economic contributions, workforce development, and community impact, positioning the enterprise as an integrated academic and clinical system.

The Impact

The findings show that LSUHS and OLHS-NL are not only North Louisiana’s leading healthcare providers but also among the state’s most powerful economic engines. In FY25, the enterprise generated $3.7 billion in statewide economic impact, supporting 30,974 jobs and $177.9 million in state and local tax revenue, returning $29.13 for every $1 in state investment. Regionally, it produced $3.6 billion in impact and supported one in every 12 jobs, underscoring its critical role in the local economy.

Beyond economics, the partnership expands access to care through the region’s only Level I Trauma Center and other key designations, while strengthening the physician pipeline through robust training programs. With $18.5 million in charitable contributions and volunteerism and $39.1 million in charity care, the enterprise also serves as a vital safety net. Together, these outcomes position LSUHS and OLHS-NL as cornerstones of Louisiana’s healthcare system and drivers of long-term economic and community health.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
