South Hills Interfaith Movement
Stronger Communities Drive a Stronger Regional Economy

The Challenge
South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) needed a comprehensive understanding of its economic and social impact in Allegheny County and Pennsylvania. With a wide range of programs serving families, seniors, youth, and refugee communities, SHIM sought to quantify both the financial and societal benefits of its services in FY25.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted an independent economic and social impact assessment to evaluate SHIM’s contributions to the regional economy and community. The analysis examined SHIM’s operations, employment, and program expenditures to estimate the ripple effects of its activities, including broader economic impacts and societal cost savings generated through programs such as Basic Needs Assistance, Youth Programs, Family Support, and Community Building.
SHIM’s programs deliver meaningful community impact, strengthening families, supporting youth development, and fostering connections across the South Hills region. The study found that SHIM produces approximately $12.8 million in total societal cost savings, meaning that every $1 invested in the organization generates about $3 in savings for Allegheny County. In addition, SHIM’s operations support 108 jobs and $8.5 million in economic activity within Allegheny County, while generating $249,747 in local tax revenue. At the statewide level, SHIM’s impact reaches $10 million in economic activity and 127 jobs supported, demonstrating how investments in programs such as family support, youth development, food access, and immigrant services not only improve lives but also deliver measurable economic returns for the broader community.
