Exploring Georgia’s Potential for a New School of Optometry

The Challenge

Georgia currently lacks an in-state optometry program, requiring students to leave the state for professional training and contributing to ongoing workforce gaps in vision care. The University System of Georgia engaged Tripp Umbach to assess the feasibility of establishing the state’s first School of Optometry.

How We Helped

Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive feasibility study evaluating program demand, financial implications, and accreditation readiness. The study also identified opportunities for partnerships and program development that could support workforce growth and strengthen access to optometric education within Georgia.

The report provided USG leadership with the data and analysis needed to make informed decisions about next steps. While no implementation plans have been announced, the findings offer a strong foundation for strategic planning and potential future expansion of optometric education in the state.
