The Challenge

Tufts University, a globally recognized private research institution in the Greater Boston area, sought to quantify its broad economic and social influence across multiple levels—from its host communities to the national stage. The goal was to provide a comprehensive picture of how Tufts’ education, research, and operations contribute to economic vitality and workforce development in Massachusetts and beyond.

How We Helped

In Fall 2023, Tufts partnered with Tripp Umbach to conduct an independent economic impact study evaluating the university’s influence on the United States, the New England region, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and its home communities of Boston, Grafton, Medford, and Somerville. The analysis measured direct, indirect, and induced impacts of Tufts’ operations and spending during Fiscal Year 2023, encompassing academic programs, research, athletics, and alumni engagement.

The Impact

In FY23, Tufts University generated a total economic impact of $3.1 billion across the United States—comprising $974.6 million in direct spending and $2.2 billion in indirect and induced impacts. The university supported 17,406 jobs across various industries, including university employment and jobs sustained through suppliers, contractors, and local businesses. Tufts also generated $151.3 million in tax impacts, reinforcing its vital role as a driver of workforce strength, innovation, and community prosperity.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
