University of Missouri–St. Louis
Advancing Opportunity and Growth Across Missouri

The Challenge
As the only public university in the St. Louis metro region, the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) plays a pivotal role in advancing education, innovation, and economic vitality across Missouri. To better communicate its value to stakeholders, UMSL sought a comprehensive, data-backed analysis quantifying its economic and social impact statewide.
How We Helped
UMSL engaged Tripp Umbach to conduct an independent economic impact study measuring the university’s contributions across St. Louis City, St. Louis County, the greater metropolitan area, and the State of Missouri. Through rigorous analysis of spending, employment, and community engagement data, Tripp Umbach assessed how UMSL drives workforce development, business growth, and cultural enrichment throughout the region.
In FY23, UMSL generated $555.1 million in total economic impact, including $148.8 million in direct spending and $406.3 million in indirect and induced effects. The university supported 7,131 jobs statewide—2,904 directly and 4,227 indirectly—and generated $28.9 million in state and local tax revenue. Beyond financial impact, UMSL’s faculty, staff, and students contributed an estimated $24.6 million in volunteer service, underscoring the university’s deep commitment to community engagement and social progress.
