The Challenge

Founded in 1869, the University of Nebraska System is the state’s only public research university system, uniting four distinct campuses that collectively elevate educational excellence, research, and community impact across Nebraska and beyond. With a mission to transform lives and communities, the system continues to serve as a cornerstone of innovation and opportunity for the state.

How We Helped

In June 2021, the University of Nebraska System partnered with Tripp Umbach to conduct a comprehensive economic impact assessment of its statewide operations. Using fiscal year 2020–2021 data, the analysis measured direct, indirect, and induced business activity and government revenue generated by the system’s presence in Nebraska. Data sources included university operational spending, faculty and staff wages, student and visitor expenditures, and the ripple effects on local businesses supported by university-related activity.

Tripp Umbach’s findings confirmed the University of Nebraska System as a powerful economic engine, generating $5.8 billion annually in total economic impact across the state. University operations directly and indirectly support 47,342 jobs, while alumni employed in the region contribute an additional $2.9 billion in economic activity, supporting 30,416 jobs and generating $129 million in state and local revenue.
Beyond financial contributions, the University’s influence extends deeply into the social fabric of Nebraska. In FY21 alone, employees and students generated $102.6 million in charitable donations and volunteer services, underscoring the University of Nebraska System’s enduring commitment to improving lives, strengthening communities, and fueling statewide growth.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
