UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

Quantifying the Statewide Impact of Cancer Research and Innovation

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Challenge

As one of the nation’s leading cancer research institutions, UNC Lineberger needed an updated, independent analysis to quantify its expanding impact on research, innovation, and economic growth across North Carolina. With ongoing reporting requirements tied to the University Cancer Research Fund (UCRF), the center sought clear, data-backed evidence of how its work strengthens the state’s health, workforce, and innovation economy.

How We Helped

Building on a partnership of more than two decades, Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive economic impact study to quantify UNC Lineberger’s operational, research, and fiscal contributions statewide. Using a blend of primary and secondary data, IMPLAN modeling, and detailed analysis of research spin-offs and employment effects, the study captured both the center’s direct impact and its broader influence on North Carolina’s innovation economy.

The Impact

The final report provided a clear, data-driven narrative illustrating how UNC Lineberger advances discovery while fueling economic growth. Findings continue to inform strategic planning, strengthen partnerships, and support policy advocacy by showcasing the center’s measurable contributions to job creation, workforce development, and public health across the state.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
