Driving Innovation, Research, and Economic Growth in Nebraska

The Challenge
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Medicine, is a world-class facility dedicated to advancing cancer care, research, and education. Designed around the needs of patients, the center combines state-of-the-art clinical services with groundbreaking research to improve outcomes and quality of life for individuals battling cancer.
How We Helped
In 2022, UNMC engaged Tripp Umbach to conduct an economic impact analysis of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center for Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21). The study assessed the total economic, employment, and tax contributions generated by the center’s clinical, research, operational, and capital activities, as well as spending by employees, students, and out-of-state visitors.
The Impact
Tripp Umbach found that the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center generated $629.1 million in total economic impact and supported 4,201 jobs across Nebraska in FY21. The center also contributed $11.2 million in state and local tax revenue, reflecting its vital role in fueling the state’s economy.
Beyond its economic influence, the center serves as a cornerstone of innovation and education—attracting top scientists, clinicians, and students while advancing research and outreach that benefit communities statewide. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center stands as both a healthcare leader and a powerful driver of Nebraska’s long-term economic and social vitality.
