Virginia Tech
Driving Virginia Forward

The Challenge
Virginia Tech sought to clearly communicate the full scale of its statewide economic and employment impact, reflecting its responsibilities as a public, land-grant institution whose mission extends well beyond instruction. The objective was to demonstrate how its campuses, research enterprise, athletics programs, service and outreach activities, and alumni generate measurable economic and social outcomes for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive economic and community impact study to evaluate how Virginia Tech’s operations, research enterprise, campuses, athletics programs, and outreach initiatives contribute to the Commonwealth’s economy. Through rigorous analysis and clear narrative framing, complex data were translated into an integrated story that highlights the university’s land-grant mission and its role in advancing workforce development and statewide economic competitiveness.
In FY25, Virginia Tech generated $4.7 billion in total economic impact across Virginia, including $1.6 billion in direct spending and $3.1 billion in indirect and induced activity. The university supported 35,519 jobs statewide and produced $316.9 million in state and local tax revenue, benefiting public services and infrastructure throughout the Commonwealth. These findings underscore Virginia Tech’s role as a major economic engine and long-term partner in Virginia’s growth.
