The Economic Reach of WVU and WVU Medicine

The Challenge
West Virginia University (WVU) and WVU Medicine sought a comprehensive and credible assessment of their combined economic and community impact across West Virginia and nationally. As the state’s flagship land-grant institution and largest integrated healthcare system, they required clear, data-driven evidence of how their combined activities support economic growth, job creation, tax revenues, and community vitality. This analysis was particularly important for informing policymakers, stakeholders, and community partners whose decisions influence education, healthcare access, workforce development, and long-term investment across the Mountain State.
How We Helped
Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive economic impact analysis measuring the combined effects of West Virginia University and WVU Medicine at both the state and national levels. Using established economic modeling techniques, the study quantified employment, economic activity, tax revenue, and community benefits, producing an accessible, data-driven report to support strategic planning, advocacy, and public engagement.
The study found that WVU and WVU Medicine generate more than $14.3 billion annually for West Virginia’s economy, representing 17% of the state’s GDP, and support over 84,000 jobs statewide while contributing $890 million in state and local taxes. Nationally, their $21.6 billion economic footprint underscores WVU and WVU Medicine’s role as major economic engines and mission-driven institutions with impact extending well beyond West Virginia.
