Exploring the Future of Medical Education in Ohio

The Challenge

Founded in 1831, Xavier University is a nationally recognized Jesuit institution in Cincinnati, Ohio, dedicated to educating students intellectually, morally, and spiritually. Guided by its mission to serve the common good, Xavier sought to explore opportunities to expand its academic offerings through the potential development of an osteopathic medical school—addressing growing healthcare needs across Ohio and the region.

How We Helped

Tripp Umbach conducted a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the opportunities and benefits of establishing a new osteopathic medical school in Cincinnati. The engagement included project planning, statewide analysis, environmental scanning, key stakeholder interviews, financial and economic modeling, and an assessment of statewide healthcare workforce needs.

The Impact

Tripp Umbach’s analysis found that a new medical school at Xavier would meaningfully strengthen Ohio’s physician workforce and yield significant statewide economic benefits. Once fully operational, the proposed school is projected to support 420 jobs, generate $66.7 million in annual economic impact, and contribute $2.7 million in state and local tax revenue.
Tripp Umbach recommended that Xavier advance to the next phase of planning, continuing strategic discussions with TriHealth, The Christ Hospital, and other clinical partners to establish a sustainable framework for medical education and graduate medical training in Ohio.

Every successful project starts with a conversation.
